In Conversation: Celebrating 75 Years of Spectra, A Hosts Global Member

Legacy. Leadership. Partnership. And the People Behind It All.

Seventy-five years.

In the meetings and events industry, that’s more than an anniversary. It’s a remarkable achievement.

Over seven and a half decades, the way we plan meetings has changed dramatically. Technology has transformed how we connect. Destinations have evolved. Expectations continue to rise. Yet through all of that change, one thing has remained constant: great events are built on great relationships.

That’s what made us curious.

Rather than looking back through a timeline of milestones, we wanted to hear from two people who have experienced Host Global Member, Spectra’s journey from different—but deeply connected—perspectives.

Managing Director, Paul Miller has spent much of his career helping shape Spectra from within. Kurt Paben has known Paul for more than 20 years, long before becoming CEO of Hosts Global. Over the years, their paths crossed as industry colleagues, leaders, and friends, building a relationship grounded in trust, mutual respect, and a shared passion for this industry. Today, that relationship continues through Spectra’s role as a valued Hosts Global Member, bringing another layer of partnership to a friendship that’s already stood the test of time.

As we sat down to talk, we expected to hear about longevity.

Instead, the conversation kept coming back to something much simpler: people.

More Than a Number

Q: Paul, reaching 75 years is a rare milestone in any industry. What does this anniversary mean to you personally, not just professionally?

Paul: Reaching 75 years is incredibly special, and for me it goes well beyond a professional milestone. Having been part of Spectra for much of my career, it represents a sense of pride, continuity, and belonging. It’s about the people, past and present, who have shaped the business, the friendships built along the way, and the shared experiences that stay with you long after the events themselves. Personally, it feels like being part of something enduring, something that has genuine meaning and legacy.

It’s hard not to smile reading that answer. While anniversaries often focus on accomplishments, Paul immediately brought the conversation back to the people who made them possible.

We wondered if someone looking from the outside would see it the same way.

Q: Kurt, from your perspective, what does reaching 75 years say about a company?

Kurt: Reaching 75 years is an extraordinary achievement, and one that very few companies attain. It speaks to resilience, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to excellence across generations of leadership and team members. In an industry that has experienced tremendous change over the decades, a milestone like this demonstrates that Hosts Global Member Spectra has continually evolved while remaining true to its core values. More than anything, it reflects the dedication of countless individuals whose passion, expertise, and commitment have built a legacy that continues to thrive today.

Different perspectives. The same conclusion. Great companies don’t last because they’re lucky. They last because people continue choosing to believe in what they’ve built.

Staying True While Moving Forward

The meetings and events industry looks nothing like it did 75 years ago. That’s exactly why we wanted to ask what has remained unchanged.

Q: Paul, when you look back over the decades, what core values have stayed with Spectra?

Paul: At the heart of Spectra, the values have remained remarkably consistent: a commitment to excellence, integrity in everything we do, and a genuine care for our clients and supplier partners. There has always been a strong emphasis on delivering exceptional experiences, paying attention to detail, and going the extra mile. Just as important is the collaborative spirit within the team, supporting one another and taking pride collectively in what we deliver.

Those values don’t stay behind the scenes. They’re something longtime partners experience firsthand.

Q: Kurt, you’ve known Paul for many years. What has always stood out to you about his leadership?

Kurt: What has always stood out to me about Paul is his combination of professionalism, humility, and genuine commitment to relationships. Throughout his career, he has consistently led with integrity and a long-term perspective, focusing not only on business success but on building trust with clients, partners, and colleagues alike.

Having served alongside him in leadership roles within SITE, I’ve had the opportunity to see firsthand his dedication to advancing our industry as a whole. Paul is the kind of leader who understands that success is built through people, and that philosophy is reflected throughout the entire Spectra organization and the culture they have built over generations.

There’s a phrase that comes up often in our industry: people do business with people. Listening to Paul and Kurt, it’s easy to see why that idea has stood the test of time.

Growing Without Losing Your Identity

Innovation is essential in our industry. Every year brings new technology, new expectations, and new ways to create unforgettable experiences.

But how do you evolve without losing what made clients trust you in the first place?

Q: Paul, what’s been the key to staying relevant while honoring Spectra, A Hosts Global Member’s legacy?

Paul: The key has been balancing innovation with authenticity. The industry has changed dramatically, but our willingness to adapt, embracing new ideas, technologies, and client expectations, has allowed us to stay relevant. At the same time, we’ve never lost sight of who we are or what we stand for. That consistency gives clients confidence, while our openness to evolve keeps us fresh and competitive.

That balance between honoring the past and embracing the future is something Kurt believes sets legacy companies apart.

Q: What role do legacy partners like Spectra, A Hosts Global Member, play in shaping the future of our industry?

Kurt: Legacy partners play an incredibly important role because they provide both perspective and leadership. They carry decades of experience, lessons learned, and institutional knowledge while helping guide the next generation of industry professionals. Companies like Hosts Global Member, Spectra demonstrate that longevity and innovation are not mutually exclusive. By continuing to invest in people, embrace change, and uphold the highest standards, legacy partners help shape the future of our industry while preserving the values that have made our profession so impactful.

The One Word That Kept Coming Up

As our conversation continued, we noticed something.

No matter which question we asked, the answers kept leading back to the same word.

Partnership.

Not because it’s a buzzword. Because it’s the foundation of everything Spectra, A Hosts Global Member, has built over the past 75 years.

Q: Paul, what does true partnership mean to you today?

Paul: True partnership today is about trust, transparency, and shared ambition. It’s not just about delivering a service. It’s about working collaboratively, understanding each other’s goals, and creating something better together than either could alone. The strongest partnerships we have are built over time through honest communication, reliability, and a willingness to go beyond expectations when it matters most.

For more than 20 years, Kurt has watched those values come to life through his friendship with Paul and, more recently, through Spectra’s role as a valued Hosts Global member. We asked him what makes relationships like these so important to the strength of the Alliance.

Q: Kurt, why are relationship-driven partners like Spectra so important to the strength of the Hosts Global Alliance?

Kurt: The Hosts Global Alliance is built on trusted relationships, shared values, and a commitment to delivering exceptional experiences worldwide. Partners like Spectra embody those principles. Their longstanding reputation, deep destination expertise, and collaborative approach strengthen not only the Alliance but also the confidence our clients place in our global solution.

Spectra has been a valued member of the Hosts Global Alliance because they consistently demonstrate what true partnership looks like, supporting fellow members, sharing knowledge, and contributing to the collective success of the Alliance. Their willingness to invest in relationships and elevate those around them makes our entire company stronger.

Looking Ahead

Celebrating 75 years naturally invites reflection. But neither Paul nor Kurt spent much time looking backward.

Both were focused on what comes next.

Q: Paul, what excites you most about Spectra’s next chapter?

Paul: What excites me most is the opportunity to build on an incredible foundation while continuing to evolve. The next chapter is about nurturing new talent, strengthening global partnerships, and embracing innovation in how we design and deliver experiences. It’s also about continuing to invest in relationships like those we’ve built through the Hosts Global Alliance, where collaboration and shared expertise make all of us stronger. There is a real energy in the business, and I believe the future holds just as much potential as in the past, if not more so.

Before wrapping up, we asked one final question.

Q: In one sentence, what’s the foundation of a partnership that truly stands the test of time?

Paul: A partnership that stands the test of time is built on trust, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to support one another through both success and challenge.

Kurt: A partnership that stands the test of time is built on trust, mutual respect, shared values, and a commitment to growing together over the long term, qualities that have been at the heart of Spectra’s success for the past 75 years.

Here’s to the Next Chapter

When we started this conversation, we thought we’d be talking about a milestone.

Instead, we found ourselves talking about something much bigger.

Relationships.

Trust.

Shared values.

The willingness to evolve while staying true to who you are.

That’s what 75 years looks like.

Congratulations to everyone at Spectra on this incredible milestone. Hosts Global is proud to celebrate alongside you and grateful for a partnership that continues to inspire all of us. Here’s to the next chapter and to the relationships that will shape it.
