EcoZip Kaikoura (located 2 hours north of Christchurch) opened this past month. 5 lines runsfrom the mountains down towards the beach with spectacular ocean and highland views. The longest line runs an incredible 613 metres and you can reach up to 70km/h as you speed down the line, 160m from the ground! Spectacular.

Adventure

  • Ziplining – Zip your way past stunning harbour views on Waiheke Island, enjoy an immersive wilderness experience through the treetops in Rotorua or fly through the air in lush rainforest canopy on the West Coast tree tops. Gaze at the Remarkables mountain range in Queenstown, or combine zip lining with river tubing and glow worms on the West Coast or the brand new EcoZip Kaikoura with one line running an exhilerating 613 metres, 160m off the ground! It’s the perfect combination of adrenalin, nature and speed.
  • Bungy – Take a leap of faith on a bungy at the original Kawarau Bungy site(opens in new window), or New Zealand’s highest at the top of the Nevis (both in Queenstown). Or for a completely different style of bungy, why not try the Auckland Harbour Bridge or Taupo Bungy on the Waikato River. As the home of bungy, New Zealand doesn’t disappoint!
  • Off-Road Driving – Buckle up, hold tight and head out on a scenic wilderness off-road adventure on one of New Zealand’s comprehensive network of back-country roads and tracks, including behind Queenstown where Lord of the Rings was filmed. Or why not try your luck on the colossal sand dunes of the popular Ninety Mile Beach in Northland.
  • Rafting – From the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world (7m) in Rotorua to rivers where rapids range from a gentle grade 1 to an extreme grade 5, New Zealand has it all. Tongariro River in Lake Taupō, the wild West Coast and Queenstown are among the popular rafting spots in the country.

Foodie

  • Crayfish & Seafood – With more than 14,000 kilometres of coastline, it’s no wonder New Zealand is home to some of the best seafood in the world. Known for it’s amazing crayfish, the small town of Kaikōura has ‘seafood caravans’ dotted along the coast. The most famous is Nin’s Bin, which is operated by a local family who have been selling crayfish there since 1977. Creamy green-lipped mussels can be found in Marlborough, especially in Havelock. And Mount Cook is known for delicious king salmon.
  • Hangi (food cooked under the ground) – The Māori hāngī is a traditional earth oven style of cooking. Now saved mainly for special occasions, foods cooked in a hāngī include chicken, pork and mutton, as well as pumpkin, potato and kumara (sweet potato). One of the best places to enjoy this cultural feast is Rotorua, in the central North Island, where you can also taste food that has been steam-cooked in naturally heated geothermal pools. You might also get to savour a delicious hāngī-steamed pudding for dessert.
  • New Zealand wine, beer and other beverages – In terms of wine, New Zealand punches above its weight. Enjoy full-bodied pinot noir, light and fruity sauvignon blanc and the deep, peppery flavours of a New Zealand syrah. Craft beer breweries are gaining popularity, as are cideries. Created in 1907, Lemon & Paeroa (better known as L&P) is a non-alcoholic soft drink made from lemon and carbonated water, the name stems from originally being created in the town of Paeroa. Feijoa juices, healthy kombucha creations and other fruit drinks(opens in new window) can be found in shop fridges throughout the country.

  • Hot Water Beach – At Hot Water Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula, in the North Island of New Zealand, visitors can create their own natural jacuzzi in the wet sand during low tide. Purchase a spade at the nearby shop or bring your own and build a private hot pool with a stunning ocean view.
  • Bathe in the waters of Ngawha Springs – The geothermal waters of Ngawha Springs(opens in new window) in Te Tai Tokerau, Northland, are famous for their healing properties. Traditionally, Māori women bathed in the waters after childbirth and Māori warriors from warring tribes bathed together after battle. Ngawha Springs has 24 public and private pools to choose from, each with its own temperature, colour and mineral content. This means you can choose your pool based on your purpose – for instance, some pools are used to treat skin conditions, while others are recommended for chest infections. All are perfect for relaxing in.

  •  Visit Hobbiton – Just outside of the Waikato town of Matamata, Sir Peter Jackson discovered the perfect place to create The Shire and village of Hobbiton. To this day, the movie set remains and is a spectacular place to visit, and it’s not just for fans of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies.
  • Southern Lights – While the Northern Lights, the Aurora Borealis, is a famous and beloved bucket list item for night sky watchers, the lesser known Aurora Australis or Southern Lights is no less spectacular. From Dunedin, the Southern Lights appear just over the southern horizon creating remarkable reflections in the water and delighting photographers.
  • Waitomo Caves – An ancient subterranean world in the heart of New Zealand’s central North Island, the Waitomo Cave system is a series of fascinating and dramatic natural wonders. The glow-worm grotto is one of the most popular attractions where visitors travel by boat into the spectacular cave guided by the light of thousands of unique New Zealand glow worms.

Culture

  • Discover inspiring cultural tours at Te Puia – Tucked into the Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley in Rotorua, amid plumes of steam, is Te Puia. Te Puia is a living Māori village that offers a unique insight into the culture and history of the Māori people. It is known for its New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, Āhua Gallery, kiwi conservation centre, cultural performance, and tours. But also for the Pōhutu geyser – a particularly large and active geyser, which erupts up to 20 times day.
  • Paddle the Whanganui River with Maori guides – Step back in time and travel deep into the heart of the Ruapehu district with Owhango Adventures for a spiritual journey on traditional waka (transport). The Whanganui iwi will welcome you with open arms on a three-, four-, or five-day guided tour through one of the most untouched parts of Aotearoa, showcasing their respect for the awa (river), traditional customs and the ways of ‘the river people’. The beautiful Whanganui River has been enshrined as a living being in law and protected by its people. Learn waiata (songs) as you paddle across the flowing waters, tackle small rapids and see culturally significant sites of importance. Enjoy the storytelling of the old days, and camp at the iwi’s remote Tieke marae. An experience of a lifetime.
  • An Āmiki Cultural Food Tour is the best way to discover Ōtautahi Christchurch. You’ll walk, talk, and eat your way through the city with a local Māori historian, who’ll explain how the city’s present-day bricks and mortar reflect the region’s rich history and culture. The Āmiki guides are excellent storytellers – after all, Āmiki means storytelling in Māori. Plus, each tour is different, tailored to the interests of the visitors – so, there’s no well-worn recitations from official scripts here, but living and breathing tours that are constantly changing. Along the way, you’ll sample kai (Māori cuisine) and by the end of the tour, your belly will be as full as your mind.

Leisure

  • Just an hour from Rotorua you will find Taupō, an outdoor adventurers’ playground. At the Wairakei Terraces and Thermal Health Spa you can bathe in the therapeutic waters containing silica which is said to help restore collagen, strengthen bones and boost the immunity. Wander around the silica terraces or experience a Māori cultural performance before seeping into the steam.
  • Learn about New Zealand’s national team at the All Blacks Experience in Auckland and immerse yourself in the fully guided, state-of-the-art, interactive showcase. Experience what it feels to be part of the team, face the full force of a six-metre high All Blacks haka and discover some of the stories behind some of the world-famous rugby players, moments, and matches. This unique rugby attraction is an experience not to be missed.
  • TranzAlpine Train – The TranzAlpine scenic train journeys between Christchurch and Greymouth. From the comfort of our carriages, see the fields of the Canterbury Plains and farmland, followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River. Your train then climbs into the majestic Southern Alps to Arthurs Pass National Park, before descending through lush beech rainforest to the West Coast town of Greymouth – a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the always-popular glaciers.
