Where design outside the box transforms the world’s most unconventional spaces into unforgettable event experiences
There’s a moment every planner is chasing.
It’s the second guests walk into a space and pause—not because they’re confused, but because they’re completely captivated. The room (or field, or fortress, or rooftop) doesn’t just look different. It feels different.
And more often than not, that moment doesn’t happen in a ballroom.
Across the Hosts Global Alliance, the most memorable experiences are unfolding in places planners might not expect: a centuries-old bullring, a working rice field, a canal, a fortress, a garden, even a military armory. What these spaces have in common in our March Design Edition isn’t just uniqueness—it’s possibility.
Because when you start with the unexpected, design becomes something more powerful than décor. It becomes storytelling.
Where History Becomes the Canvas
Some spaces come with stories already written—you just have to decide how to tell them differently.
In Marbella, Spaintacular reimagined a historic bullring as an elegant open-air dining arena, leaning into its circular form instead of resisting it. Guests dined at the heart of the space where spectacle once lived, surrounded by soft lighting and layered textures that bridged past and present.

Meanwhile, along the Adriatic, Eurotravel Solutions transformed a 500-year-old fortress in Dubrovnik into a refined event environment—without compromising its UNESCO-protected integrity. The design challenge wasn’t just aesthetic; it was logistical, operational, and deeply respectful of history. The payoff? A panoramic, emotionally charged guest experience that no modern venue could replicate.

And in Charleston, Experience Holy City took Middleton Place—a National Historic Landmark—and resisted the urge to over-design. Instead, they let the landscape lead. Lighting, texture, and spatial flow enhanced what was already there, creating something immersive without overpowering the setting.

Even in Switzerland, World Events Consulting turned a 16th-century farm into a fully immersive Swiss chalet experience—balancing heritage details like wood textures and traditional patterns with contemporary staging and lighting to create something entirely new.
The takeaway for planners: Historic venues don’t need to be “transformed” in the traditional sense. The most powerful design choice is often knowing what to preserve—and where to layer in contrast.
When Landscape Leads the Experience
Some of the most impactful event spaces aren’t built—they’re discovered.
In Vietnam, Realm Events turned rice paddies, rivers, and historic streets into fully immersive environments. Guests wandered through lantern-lit fields, dined in village-inspired settings, and floated along waterways toward a glowing bar experience. Each moment unfolded like a narrative, blending culture, movement, and design into one seamless journey.

The brilliance here isn’t just visual—it’s strategic. Designing in active landscapes means working with constraints: preserving crops, managing infrastructure, and respecting heritage. But those constraints create authenticity.
In Ireland, Moloney & Kelly took a humble coffee dock—the kind of place locals pass daily—and transformed it into a vibrant, farmers market-style festival. Bunting, florals, and flexible layouts encouraged connection, turning an overlooked space into something joyful and distinctly local.

The takeaway for planners: Nature and everyday spaces already hold emotional value. Your role isn’t to compete with them—it’s to choreograph how guests move through them.
Designing the Journey, Not Just the Venue
What if the venue wasn’t a single place—but a sequence of moments?
Creators of Live approached Amsterdam this way, designing a VIP experience that unfolded across the city. A private canal cruise became the opening act, followed by an exclusive reception at A’DAM Tower, a curated lunch on the water, and a grand finale at a historic canal house—complete with horse-drawn carriage departures.

This isn’t just creative—it’s intentional. Each transition builds anticipation, each setting adds a layer, and the overall experience becomes something guests feel rather than simply attend.
The takeaway for planners: Think beyond static spaces. When you design the journey, every transition becomes part of the story.
Reimagining Scale, Structure, and Expectation
Some venues challenge you with scale. Others with rules. The best designs turn both into advantages.
Roberts Events Group faced a vast military armory—and turned it into a circus-inspired immersive world. Through draping, lighting, and spatial design, they carved intimacy out of enormity, guiding guests through moments of surprise and discovery.

In Florida, e2 took a different approach at The Vinoy. Instead of transforming the ballroom completely, they enhanced it—using modern elements and strategic lighting to highlight its architectural beauty rather than compete with it.

And across the UK, Spectra continues to unlock venues most planners never get access to—castles, bridges, galleries, even recording studios—proving that exclusivity and creativity often go hand in hand.

The takeaway for planners: Every venue comes with constraints. The question isn’t how to eliminate them—it’s how to design because of them.
The Bigger Shift: Why “Outside the Box” Matters More Than Ever
What ties all of these experiences together isn’t just creativity—it’s intention.
Planners today are being asked to deliver more than beautiful events. They’re being asked to create meaning. Connection. Memory.

And that’s exactly why unconventional spaces are so powerful.
They:
- Instantly create a sense of discovery
- Anchor the event in its destination
- Offer built-in storytelling
- And push design to be more thoughtful, not just more elaborate
